Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concern — it’s already reshaping how we work. If you’ve followed along in this series, you know why preparing matters (Blog 1) and how to map your own exposure (Blog 2). Now it’s time to take the next step: building a skill profile that keeps you not just safe, but indispensable in the AI era.
Enter the T-Profile — a simple but powerful way to think about your career resilience.
What Is a T-Profile?
Picture the letter T.
The vertical line represents deep expertise in one area — the subject, industry, or function where you bring unique value.
The horizontal line represents broad, transferable skills that allow you to collaborate across disciplines and adapt to change.
Together, these form a resilient career profile: deep enough to make you trusted, broad enough to make you adaptable.

Why the T-Profile Matters in the Age of AI
AI is incredibly good at certain things: crunching data, drafting text, automating repeatable workflows. But it struggles with nuance, judgement, ethics, and empathy. That’s where the T-Profile gives you an edge.
Vertical strength ensures you remain credible in your domain. AI may support you, but it can’t replace the insight built from years of practice.
Horizontal breadth ensures you can flex as roles evolve, draw connections others miss, and integrate AI into real-world workflows.
In short: the T-Profile makes you AI-complementary rather than AI-replaceable.
Minimum Viable AI Literacy
You don’t need to become a data scientist to thrive with AI. But you do need to build minimum viable AI literacy — just enough to work effectively with the tools. This includes:
Writing effective prompts (clear, structured inputs).
Fact-checking and verifying outputs.
Practicing “data hygiene” — ensuring you feed AI accurate, safe information.
Using simple automation (e.g. scheduling, summaries, templates).
Think of it like learning to drive a car. You don’t need to be a mechanic, but you need to know how to operate safely.
Durable Human Skills to Strengthen
Alongside AI literacy, the horizontal bar of your T should include the human strengths AI cannot replicate. These include:
Communication: Clear, persuasive, and empathetic conversations.
Problem-Solving: Seeing the bigger picture and tackling complex, ambiguous challenges.
Leadership: Inspiring trust, guiding teams, and making tough calls.
Empathy: Understanding human needs, motivations, and emotions.
Resilience: Adapting to setbacks, uncertainty, and constant change.
These are the skills that differentiate humans from machines — and they’re only becoming more valuable.
How to Start Building Your T-Profile
Define Your Vertical: Identify the domain you want to be known for. This could be an industry (finance, healthcare), a function (marketing, HR), or a specialist area (compliance, training).
Expand Your Horizontal: Choose 2–3 durable skills to actively strengthen this year. Pair them with a baseline of AI literacy.
Blend the Two: Look for opportunities where your deep expertise and human strengths intersect with AI tools. That’s your sweet spot of resilience.
Conclusion: Future-Proofing Through Balance
The future of work won’t belong to those who ignore AI, nor to those who try to out-compete it. It will belong to those who know where to lean on AI — and where to lean on their irreplaceable human strengths.
By building your T-Profile now, you’re not just adapting. You’re positioning yourself to lead, thrive, and stay resilient in a world where technology and humanity work side by side.
In the next post, we’ll explore how to safely adopt AI by starting “inside the frontier” — using it where it already excels before pushing boundaries.
Do you already think in terms of a T-Profile for your career?
Yes, I’ve built mine
Somewhat, I’m aware but not intentional
Not yet, this is new to me
